Reality-Bending Fan Art Envisions a Trippy Scarlet Witch / Doctor Strange Battle

New fan art for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sees two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most powerful magic users battle in trippy, spellbinding detail.

The image sees Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch wield their incredible powers against each other as the multiverse warps around them. While the artwork is not official promotional material for the film and the first trailer indicates that the two magic users will be working together throughout the story, variants and potentially evil doppelgangers have been teased for both Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch, meaning an epic throwdown between the two is possible.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will not be lacking in terms of villains. Gargantos, an obscure, squid-like Lovecraftian monster from the comics who first appeared in Roy Thomas and Marie Severin’s Sub-Mariner # 13 in 1969, has been confirmed as one of the movie’s antagonists thanks to official merchandise. Gargantos will be played by Detective Pikachu‘s Yenifer Molina.

Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Karl Mordo, who appeared as a friend, ally and mentor to the titular character in the first Doctor Strange film, will also appear as a villain. Created by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee, the character first appeared in the comics in 1963, making him one of Doctor Strange’s longest-standing nemeses. Recently released promotional art gave fans a glimpse of how Mordo has physically changed between the first movie and its upcoming sequel.

There have been several rumors concerning Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Its core premise, centered on the multiverse, has led to speculation that iconic Marvel characters may make an appearance. Rumors suggest that variants of the Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards may appear, possibly along with a major Spider-Man variant returning from Spider-Man: No Way Home. It’s worth noting that none of these rumors have been officially confirmed.

The Doctor Strange sequel isn’t the only upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe title. Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, Thor: Love and Thunder, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, She-Hulk, Secret Invasion, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and the second season of What If …? are all slated for release throughout the rest of 2022.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to hit theaters on May 6.
