The trailer for Señorita 89 reveals the dramatic thriller, produced by Spencer director Pablo Larraín ahead of the show’s premiere in February 2022.
The trailer for Miss 89 reveals a deadly beauty contest. The dramatic thriller originates from the writer and director Lucía Puenzo and is produced by Pablo Larraín, who directed Spencer and Jackie, and takes place in the middle of the glamor of 1980s Mexico. It focuses on Concepción (Ilse Salas), the matriarch of the most important beauty pageant in the country. Together with a team of expert makeup artists, in addition to coaches and even surgeons, Concepción welcomes the 32 finalists to her property – La Encantada. While there, participants will experience 3 months of hard training until they reach the Miss Mexico pageant.
But of course, as a new teaser trailer makes clear, it gives way to initial bustle and excitement for tears and potentially much worse. The streaming service Pantaya – the first premium platform dedicated to streaming Spanish-language movies and TV – premieres the first two episodes of Miss 89 on February 27 in the United States and Puerto Rico. From there, new episodes will be available every Sunday until the show ends on April 10th. In Spain and Latin America, the thriller will be available on Starzplay. You can watch the trailer along with a poster below.
With a cast that includes Juan Manuel Bernal, Ximena Romo, Natasha Dupeyron, Bárbara López, Luis Ernesto Franco, Edwarda Gurrola and Ianis Guerrero, Miss 89 is also produced by Juan de Dios, Angela Poblete, Mariane Hartard and Christian Vesper. While the ensemble may be unknown to a worldwide audience, the actors are a combination of young standouts and reputed award winners. Given the recognition of Spencer and the alluring premise, the thriller could become a big hit when it makes its debut in the new year.
