Snow turns to rain in NYC during the winter storm Sunday night

Snow is likely to turn to rain during Sunday night’s winter storm, as temperatures rise to above freezing, according to a meteorologist.

Residents in the three-state area can expect “an inch or two of slushy snow, then rain,” AccuWeather senior meteorologist John Gresiak said in an interview.

“There will be some snow on Sunday night, probably around 9 or 10. But it will very quickly in the city and other coastal areas change to rain,” he said.

The New York metro area will not see the kind of accumulation expected in western New York. Buffalo and Rochester look at 12-18 inches.

Late Sunday night and Monday morning, the metro area is likely to experience “heavy rain” and winds of 30-40 miles per hour, out from the east, he said. Wind gusts can reach 59 mph.

It could lead to coastal flooding, he said – which the National Weather Service has warned of for the city, Westchester and parts of New Jersey.

That rain is expected to “slow down” Monday, with some snow showers but probably no accumulation, Gresiak added.

The weatherman has a tip for homeowners, as Monday night will likely see a return to sub-zero temperatures: “If you have slush lying around and you want to get rid of it, do so on Monday.”
