The new Cinderella the film is a full musical and it is written and directed by Kay Cannon, who first became prominent as a writer on shows like 30 Rock and New girl before writing the hit movie Pitch perfectly. She debuted as a director with the comedy in 2018 Blockers and co-wrote the romantic comedy from Netflix in 2019 Let it snow, but with Cinderella she says she wanted to make the story feel modern to contemporary audiences:

Although so many elements of the classic Cinderella tale are timeless, I really wanted to reach a new generation through contemporary touches of many of the aspects that felt outdated. The opportunity to turn some of the classic tropics upside down was exciting to me, and I could not wait to retell this in a way that is more related to what girls, including my almost eight-year-old daughter and young women go through Today. Our Cinderella is not just a beautiful face waiting to be rescued by a prince. She is vocal, active, fearless and witty; she has dreams and wants independence. Her main priority is her career at a time when women could not have one. Our Cinderella is one that parents can watch their children look up to in a new way, and my hope is that families will laugh, dance and sing while watching this movie together. If you know the words, let me hear you! – Kay
