Texas Gov. Greg Abbott vowed Sunday to hire the mounted border agents under federal investigation if the Biden administration disciplines them over a viral incident involving Haitian migrants.
President Biden promised on Friday that “these people will pay” with reference to images of agents on horseback turning their reins as they tried to block migrants on September 19 from crossing the Rio Grande near Del Rio, Texas, burning a outcry over agents who “whipped” migrants.
Mr. Abbott told Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace that “if he takes action against them at all — I have worked side by side with the border patrols.
“I want them to know something,” the Republican governor said. “If they risk losing their jobs [from] a president who gives up his duty to secure the border, you have a job in the state of texas. I’ll hire you to help Texas secure our border. ”
He pushed back towards the highly controversial “whipping” tale and said the officers used their reins to control the horses.
“First, they would not have been in that situation if the Biden administration had enforced immigration laws and secured the border in the first place,” Abbott said.

“Second, as you know, Chris, the person who took these pictures said that the characterization that the Democrats have made about the border patrol using them as whips and whip people who came across the border is false. They were simply maneuvering horses, ”he said.
He referred to photographer Paul Ratje, who told KTSM-TV in El Paso that the images may have been “misunderstood”, adding that “he swung it, but I could not see him actually whipping anyone with it”, referring to the reins .
The agents shown on viral photos and video recordings have been put on administrative guard until the investigation is conducted.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said the investigation would be based on facts.
“Whether these individual border patrol agents on horseback complied with our policies and training, or whether they did not, is the subject of an investigation,” he said at Fox News Sunday. “And that study is independent, and the result will be determined by facts and no more.”
Texas lawmakers have approved nearly $ 3 billion for border security to deter illegal immigration in response to what Mr Abbot described as the Biden administration’s “neglect of duty.”
“The Biden administration cares far more about people who are not in this country than he does about the people, American citizens who live in this country,” the governor said. “And I want to intensify and support the citizens of the United States of America.”
