The ‘Freedom to Cheat Act’ will ‘clear’ the voter ID

Republican leaders warned against Democrats’ latest push for federal electoral reform on Tuesday, pointing specifically to same-day voter ID and voter registration bills.

Republican National Committee Chairman Ronna McDaniel and National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) ripped into the congressional election proposals awaiting Congress during a call with journalists just before the president Joe Biden visited Georgia on Tuesday afternoon.

“We call it the Freedom to Cheat Act,” McDaniel said of the Freedom to Vote Act, which Senate Democrats hope to pass against Republican wishes by changing the 60-vote filibuster rule.

“It removes the state’s voter ID laws that 36 states have passed,” the president said. “This bill eliminates states’ more secure voter ID requirements and replaces them with a process fraught with fraud.”

The comprehensive bill would order states with voter ID laws to expand their accepted forms of voter identification to allow for more alternatives, including forms of identification that do not include a photo.

The influential Conservative think tank Heritage Foundation, which has actively lobbyed states to tighten their electoral processes, considers “model” voter ID rules to be those that require voters to present a government-issued ID containing a photo and make it clear , that the voter is a U.S. citizen when they go to cast their vote. In December, Heritage states scored on this metric and found six states, including Georgia – a state that has become ground zero in the fight for electoral laws – received perfect results in terms of voter ID laws specifically. A further 22 states received at least partial credit or more for their voter ID laws.

McDaniel quoted Atlanta’s recent local elections, which took place some time after Governor Brian Kemp (R) signed Georgia’s high-profile law on electoral integrity last year. Despite Democrats and some corporations attacking the overhaul bill, claiming it was an expression of voter oppression by racial minorities, the major newspaper in Georgia has Atlanta-Journal Constitution reported the city election went smoothly for the voters.

“Most voters reported that they did not face any obstacles at the polls,” it said AJC wrote. McDaniel also noted that voter turnout in Atlanta increased by 17 percent.

The president added that the boycotts that took place, namely of Major League Baseball, over the election proposal happened because Democrats like Biden and suffrage activist Stacey Abrams publicly distorted it. She remarked Washington Post fact check Biden at the time awarded the president “four Pinocchios” for his comments on one of the provisions of the bill.

“Georgia lost $ 100 million in expected revenue. Companies that had struggled through the pandemic and were counting on that revenue lost because of lies told by Joe Biden and Democrats about Georgia law,” McDaniel said. “Everything they said was a lie.”

McDaniel also noted that the Freedom to Vote Act “would force 29 states to adopt voter registration on the same day. It forces [states] to let violent criminals vote. I mean, the list goes on and on about how bad, how really bad this bill is. “

Senate Democrats, led by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), have expressed serious interest in voting to change Senate rules as early as next week to push through electoral reforms, despite two Democrats continuing to oppose change the 60-vote filibuster rule, the key rule that – if changed or circumvented – would allow Schumer to pass electoral reforms by a simple majority of senators instead of 60.

Scott accused that “Democrats do not want free and fair elections. They want elections, only Democrats can win.”

“We’ve seen this last year, they’ve had a hard time, the Democrats passing their radical agenda so they want to change the rules,” Scott said. “They want to change the rules so they can ban voter ID, even though it’s very popular around the country.”
