The Last Man Teaser Usher’s Yorick Brown Into a New Future

Ben Schnetzer runs for his life in the latest teaser trailer for FX’s upcoming adaptation of the famous cartoon Y: The last man. Based on the story of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, the series will imagine a world where all the men are suddenly killed by a mysterious disease. All men, that is, except for Ben Schnetzer’s Yorick Brown and his pet monkey Ampersand.

Who rules the world? Girls. And for Yorick, it’s not that much of a good thing. In fact, as teased with recent footage, he quickly finds himself in a tough spot. While there are some who want to keep him safe, there are others who strongly want him dead “so the new world can be born.”

Y: The last man takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, where a mysterious catastrophic event simultaneously kills each mammal with a Y chromosome, but for one man, Yorick Brown, and his pet friend, the monkey known as Ampersand. The series follows Yorick as he crosses the New World as its survivors struggle with their losses and try to restore the world community led by Yorick’s mother, who is the new US President Jennifer Brown.

The struggle to bring the story about Y: The last man to screens has been as dramatic as anything that appears in Brian K. Vaughan’s usual post-apocalyptic cartoon. Development on the series began back in 2015, when the adaptation lost showrunners, stars Imogen Poots and Lashana Lynch among others, as well as its lead actress in Eternities star Barry Keoghan, who was quickly replaced by Warcraft actor Ben Schnetzer. Fortunately, the footage shown so far has teased a faithful adaptation both in terms of the history and atmosphere of this ravaged world.

However, the creativity behind the show has made some changes to reflect the modern world, including the addition of a new transman character, played by Elliot Fletcher, who does not have a direct counterpart in the original cartoon. “Yorick’s masculinity is not what sets him apart in this world – it’s his Y chromosome that sets him apart,” explained showrunner Eliza Clark. “Gender is diverse, and chromosomes are not equal to gender. And in our world – in the world of the TV show – every living mammal dies with a Y chromosome. Tragically, it includes many women; it includes non-binary humans; it includes intersex people … We’re doing a show that confirms that trans women are women, trans men are men, non-binary people are non-binary, and that’s part of the wealth of the world we get to play with. “

The ensemble cast for the series consists of several well-known names and faces, including Diane Lane as Yorick’s mother, Congresswoman Jennifer Brown, Olivia Thirlby as Hero Brown, Yorick’s sister, Diana Bang as Dr. Allison Mann, Juliana Canfield as Beth DeVille, Marin Ireland as Nora Brady, Amber Tamblyn as Kimberly Cunningham and Paul Gross as President of the United States.

Rubicon author and Animal kingdom producer Eliza Clark will now act as showrunner, as well as write the first two episodes, with Louise Friedberg as director. FX has since announced that the entire first season will be led by women, and the production also has a significant number of female department heads. The FX Productions project is produced by Clark, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson from Color Force together with Nellie Reed. Mari Jo Winkler-Ioffreda, Vaughan and Melina Matsoukas are executive producers.

Fans will not have to wait long to dive into the post-apocalyptic adventures of Yorick and Ampersand, where Y: The Last Man is scheduled to hit FX on Hulu on September 13th.
