The upcoming fourth film replaces “The Matrix” (1999), “The Matrix Reloaded” (2003) and “The Matrix Revolutions” (2003).

Asked why he agreed to return to the series after a nearly 20-year hiatus, Reeves insists: “We had filmmakers you would say yes to,” adding: “[We had] material that you wanted to commit to, to give everything you could. “

The actor is also discussing an early draft of the original script for the 1999 film, which featured a character who entered the Matrix world as a different gender.

“I think the studio was not ready for it,” he says.

He goes on to say that the film has a heart, and tells the stomach: “Not that it needed it, but the depth of why this film was made is certainly the feeling that it is a love story between Trinity and Neo.”

Adding the call he got from director Lana Wachowski to tell him about her idea to another sequel: “It was one of those phone calls where even if you’re home, you get up.”

Moss explains how she saw the new film as a rare “opportunity to embody” the filmmaker’s love.

“I’ve never felt like this before where I could see that I’m an extension of her heart in playing this role,” she says.

“The Matrix Resurrections” lands in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22nd.
