The moment that erupted shocking fights in JD Sports as children withdrew behind their parents

This is the moment a shocking brawl broke out in a department of JD Sports – as children watched in horror and hid behind their parents.

Three men have previously been convicted for their part in the ugly appearance at the store at Fort Retail Park in Cheetham Hill.

A relay was waved and mannequins and shop fittings were used as weapons.

Now footage of the fight has been released.

Murray swung a baton directly at a man in the store before turning his attention to another man using a rack of clothes to defend himself.

Their co-defendant appeared to throw a bottle of water at two more men before a victim picked up a piece of furniture, which he waved at Murray.

Gordon was then seen tossing the furniture rack and picking up and throwing a mannequin, with the third defendant pulling on the arm of a mannequin to use as a club.

The defendant swung it at someone from the other group who had armed himself in a similar manner.

Murray was then seen waving the retractable relay.

Several customers had to seek refuge at the back of the store, Manchester Crown Court heard.

In a written statement, the floor manager at JD Sports said: “This was the first Saturday opening since Covid.

“We were extremely busy and the store had lots of kids with their parents, many of whom ran away from the fight and hid behind their parents.

“At one point, a father was holding an approximately one-year-old daughter in his hands as one of the victims strode past him, trying to move away from the attack.

“As much as I’ve seen fights in the past, this incident has left me shaken.

“It makes me worry about my employees and customers, as it’s not something they should see.”

Around £ 4,100 in damage was caused by the incident.

Judge Suzanne Goddard QC said at the sentencing hearing in Manchester Crown Court: “How uncomfortable it must have been for these children and their parents to witness the humble behavior you were involved in.

“There were children there who were obviously very scared of what was happening.

“Severe fear and anxiety were caused by these people in the store.”

Gordon of Crumpsall was jailed for 22 and a half months after pleading guilty to criminal mischief, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and assault.

Murray of Salford was jailed for 20 months for the same offenses.

Another man who admitted an assault received a 26-month community order.
