Things to do: The 2021 HFCS Awards nominations

Jane Campion’s disturbing western, The power of the dog, leads the 2021 Houston Film Critics Society nominations with nine, including best film, director, lead actor (Benedict Cumberbatch), supporting role (Kirsten Dunst) and supporting role (Kodi Smit-McPhee).

The winners will be announced on 19 February.

Kenneth Branaghs Belfast, Denis Villeneuves Dune, and Sian Heders CODA are all up to five awards each, including best film. Rounding off the best image choices is Do not look up, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, Parallel Mothers, Cross, Cross… Bom and The tragedy of Macbeth.

HFCS also introduces a new award for 2021: Best Ensemble Cast. These are the nominees Belfast, CODA, fair, nightmare alley and The power of the dog.

The Society will once again award its Texas Independent Film Award (TIFA) – which honors a film shot in Lone Star State – to one of the following: Amaraica, Playing God, Red Rocket, Test Pattern or 12 mighty orphans.

The 40 members of the Houston Film Critics Society are working film journalists on television, radio, online and in traditional print. The organization’s mission is to promote the promotion and appreciation of films in the Houston community and beyond. For more info (including my “funny” bio), check out HoustonFilmCritics.com.
