“That you all support me, it really feels like love wins tonight.”
TJ Osborne, one half of the group The Brothers Osborne, won more than Vocal Duo of the Year at yesterday’s Country Music Awards. His festive kiss with his girlfriend, Abi Ventura, marked the first gay kiss in the show’s history.
“It’s been a crazy roller coaster ride for a year for us in so many ways, especially for me emotionally,” TJ said in the band’s thank you speech. “And that you all support me, it really feels like love wins tonight.”
After the victory, TJ Entertainment told Tonight that he himself discussed bringing Abi as his date to the show because of the possibility of hatred.
TJ, which was publicly released in February, is one of the few country artists signed to a major label that openly identifies itself as gay.
The Osborne brothers also performed “Younger Me” at CMAs, which TJ wrote about getting along with his sexuality.
The kiss in the air felt particularly poignant when Tennessee House earlier this year blocked a resolution honoring TJ for opening up about his sexuality.
Country music artists and fans showed their support for TJ on social media after the show.
We love to see it! Here’s to do more CMA’s history!
