‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ delayed again

Tom Cruise has finally found a movie problem he can’t solve by hanging next to a plane or jumping out of a plane or hanging out of a helicopter or doing other impossibly dangerous things in the air.

It looks like the Covid pandemic has gotten worse to the point that Paramount is on guard against the potential grosses of both Cruises’ big upcoming blockbusters. And therefore they have been delayed once more. Top Gun: Maverick (originally scheduled for release on June 26, 2020) and Mission: Impossible 7 (original release date: July 23, 2021) have both been pushed back by Paramount. They are now coming out May 27, 2022 and September 30, 2022, respectively.

Moving these movies into an environment where the box office is shaken and people are still wary of returning to the cinemas makes sense; it is giant tent poles that need giant audiences if they have any hope of making money. But Paramount has also moved their second fall film, Jackass Forever, until February 2022. And one would think that the film would do well in cinemas right now, even in this environment, thanks to the audience of young men.

According to Deadline, this move came because “Paramount did not want to cherry pick which movies will open in the current climate. In their view, all of their filmmakers and stars deserve the same consideration and positioning in a future potential robust box office marketplace. “As a result, Paramount has no more films for the rest of 2021. Their next planned project is Scream successor / restart expected on January 14, 2022.

Or maybe it should be in air quotes; “Expected.” These days, one can never expect much when it comes to theater movies.
