Tree planted in pot to protest road conditions on Fort Myers street – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WSVN) – Someone in Fort Myers took matters into their own hands when they planted a tree in a pot to protest the poor road conditions.

Residents of the area were surprised to find the strange sight in the middle of the road earlier in the weekend.

“They literally laid a whole tree in the middle of the road,” said one resident.

“I pulled up and I was like, ‘Is this really a tree in the middle of the road?'” Said John Myker, a resident of Fort Myers.

“I took two takes. I was like, ‘What? What? What is this? ‘”Said local business owner Scott Shine.

“My wife and I immediately started laughing,” said area resident Nicholas Angus.

But the tree is no laugh, nor is the hole where it grows.

Cars driving along this road must either turn left or right to get around the tree – just as they must do if they see the hole in time.

“The tree actually makes it a little harder to get around the next hole that is right next to it,” Angus said, “because I usually just drive over the hole, but now that there’s a big tree, you can not drive through a large tree. ”

Even in the rain, those responsible for planting the tree made sure to stay in place so that their message got through: it’s time to fix the holes in this street.

“I can see a lot of cars coming through here, and they’re going downhill,” Shine said. “You know, you hear this big bang, and someone hit a hole.”

“It’s ruining your tire, it’s ruining the rim, and then it’s basically ruining your day,” said Cape Coral resident Charlie Lopez.

Because this street is private, Lee County officials said they are not responsible. It is up to the private owner or owners to resolve the issue.

It is still unknown who planted the tree, but residents in the area said they appreciate the effort.
