Omicron: The first eight symptoms you need to be aware of

When Covid-19 first appeared, people were warned about three main symptoms. But with new mutations came many new symptoms of the virus.

The classic three signs of coronavirus are a high temperature, a new, persistent cough, and loss or alteration of your sense of smell or taste.

However, unlike previous variants, Omicron has presented symptoms that affect different parts of the body.

Symptoms of Omicron have been described as mild and more like a common cold, but the new strain has shown some lesser known signs, including one that appears in the eyes.

Here’s what you need to know about the new Omicron symptom, revealed by GP Dr. Nina Aslam.

What is the Omicron symptom that appears in your eyes?

Dr. Aslam told Expressen that the surprising Omicron symptom that can occur in the eyes is conjunctivitis.

Conjunctivitis or pink eye is inflammation of the conjunctiva, which is the thin membrane that lines the inside of your eyelids.

The lesser known sign of the virus was first seen on a 29-year-old in March 2020. The woman, who had minimal respiratory symptoms but suffered from “a severe case of conjunctivitis”, tested positive for coronavirus.

Dr. Aslam explained how the virus targets the eyes, saying, “Cell receptors that bring Covid variants into the body are present in the eye.”

She added that a preliminary study has also revealed that Omicron may have a greater capacity to affect the eyes than other variants. The symptom may occur in people who are otherwise asymptomatic.

The doctor advised that we protect our eyes by keeping them clean and treating any red eyes or discharge quickly. She said, “Wipe any crust away from each eye with a separate, clean cotton ball dipped in chilled boiled water.”

For mild conjunctivitis infections, we can use certain eye drops or eye ointments as treatment.

There are also certain symptoms that require urgent medical attention. The CDC asked people to keep an eye out for pale, gray or blue skin, lips or nail beds, which could indicate worryingly low levels of oxygen in the blood.

Dr. Anqelique Coetzee, who first sounded the alarm about the new variant in southern Africa, warned that those who are unvaccinated may experience symptoms such as headaches and sore muscles more intensely.
