(Welcome to On your radar, a series where we take a look at what’s going to happen to the greatest actors and filmmakers, and why you should be excited … or not.)
All eyes are fixed Scarlett Johansson right now as she navigates a high-profile lawsuit against Disney over an alleged breach of contract regarding the release of Marvel Studios’ Black widow. While we wait for the results of the legal battle, let’s look ahead and break down a few upcoming Scarlett Johansson films that are on the way.
Illumination Entertainment’s animated sequel to the original musical Sing is heading to theaters this winter, five years after the first film debuted. Johansson once again gives his distinctive voice to the character Ash, a punk-rock porcupine, and this time the gang of man-made song animals must lure a laid-back former rock star lion (played by U2 lead singer Bono) out of hiding so he can headline their new show. Sing 2 arrives December 22nd, 2021.
Johansson is also ready to direct his first streaming film, A24’s Bride, which will be available on AppleTV +. The Oscar-nominated actress will portray “a woman created to be an ideal wife — a unique obsession with a brilliant entrepreneur. When she rejects her creator, she is forced to flee from her limited existence and confront a world that sees her as a monster. It is on the run that she finds her true identity, her surprising power and the strength to recreate herself as her own creation. “Chilean director Sebastian Lelio (An amazing woman, Disobedience, Gloria Bell) is behind the camera on this one and he is writing the script along with Orange is the new black veterans Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo.
The tower of terror (…Maybe?)
Before Johansson sued one of the world’s largest media companies, she had to produce and star in a film based on the Tower of Terror, the attraction of the Disney theme park. Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley wrote the script, and last we heard, there was no director attached. At this point, it’s unclear if this movie will ever actually happen – I suppose the result of this is Black widow legal battle will determine whether both parties will be interested in working together again.
Lucy 2 (Then again, probably not)
2014s Lucy was a big hit for Johansson and helped establish that she could “open” a movie outside the Marvel Studios umbrella. By director Luc Besson‘s passion project 2017 Valerian and the city of a thousand planets refueled at the ticket office, it was suggested that he had written another script Lucy 2. Details were scarce, and it was not even clear whether Johansson would be the protagonist given her unusual fate at the end of the first film. But since then, several women have come forward and said they were assaulted or harassed by Besson, so it does not look likely that this will actually happen soon.
