Yu Yu Hakusho’s Yusuke amazes in new gender-reversed cosplay

Spirit World’s problem child Yusuke Urameshi is back in a fantastic new Yu Yu Hakusho gendered cosplay by the popular cosplayer Shellanin.

The fanart and cosplay world can offer fans a window into different worlds, and a cosplayer was just stunned with his version of the Spirit World’s problem child, Yusuke Urameshi, from Yu Yu Hakusho.

Yoshihiro Togashi’s original series Yu Yu Hakusho follows the criminal teen Yusuke Urameshi and his mishap as Spirit World’s latest Spirit Detective. The series Supernatural / Martial Arts lasted from 1990 to 1994 in Weekly Shonen Jump and served as a sort of prototype for Togashi’s next breakout series hunter x hunter. The anime adaptation from 1992 would be shown in Japan and later in the United States in 2002, with a famous cast of voice actors like Dragon Ball VA Christopher Sabat as Kazuma Kuwabara. Two OVA films Yu Yu Hakusho: The Movie and Yu Yu Hakusho Movie: Poltergeist Report, would be aired in 1993 and 1994, followed by 2019 “Two Shots” and “All or Nothing” OVA episodes. Netflix recently announced a live-action series set to premiere in December 2023 without an official trailer or casting.

Social media influencer and cosplayer Shellanin recreated the naughty mouthful in a gendered cosplay she shared Twitter under the hashtag #CurlyCosplay. A signature hashtag created by the cosplayer to promote his afro-curly cosplays in the cosplay community. Her gender-turned cosplay features Yusuke’s green school uniform with trousers and a shirt with buttons. With curly green highlighted hair and a full Spirit Gun ready to aim and shoot, Shellanin’s cosplay is a true testimony to the protagonist.

Yusuke’s Spirit Gun is a powerful weapon that uses condensed spiritual energy similar to Dragon Ball Z’s Spirit Bomb and Kamehameha Blast. Koenma demonstrates to Yusuke that he can blow any target away by shaping his index finger and thumb into a figurative gun. Yusuke learns to cultivate his Spirit Gun through gruesome training under his master, Genkai, who would also become a main fighter in the Dark Tournament arc. As a Spirit Detective, Yusuke meets the demons Hiei and Kurama and becomes friends (unaware of Hiei) and joins as a team in the Dark Tournament with Kuwabara, Koenma and Genkai.

Unfortunately due to Yu Yu Hakushos popularity, Togashi would end the series abruptly for health reasons. That Yu Yu Hakusho The creator admits that he wanted to end the series on Chapter Black, but was pressured to continue the series beyond his original conclusion. Regardless of the end of the manga, Yu Yu Hakusho is still a fan favorite among anime / manga fans, especially for cosplayers like Shellanin.
