Zoe Daniel announces tilt at Goldstein’s seat in Melbourne

Daniel, who is married and has two children – a son Arkie at 14 and a daughter Pearl at 13 – was contacted to lead by the local, non-affiliated group, Voices for Goldstein, which was formed early last year.

She said her family discussed the idea for at least a month and enthusiastically agreed to support her.

“My 14-year-old son said to me, ‘Mom, you know you can change something for us by stepping up to that table,'” she said.

Her campaign is supported by Mrs McGowan, whom she met 30 years ago when she was a rural reporter for ABC. She is also supported by former Liberal Party leaders John Hewson and Ian McPhee, who represented voters and was a minister in the Fraser government.

Mrs Daniel has never been a member of a political party and says she built a career on her reputation for objectivity in journalism. She describes herself as a fluctuating voter who assesses each candidate on their policy before voting. In 2016, she voted for Mr. Wilson.

When she looked at the group’s priorities, Mrs. Daniel said they matched her own.

The emphasis on climate change, integrity in politics and material actions on equality for women appealed to her: “It is a society-driven movement”.

Mrs Daniel’s campaign has raised around $ 100,000 through donations in the community so far. Like other independent grassroots groups, they have received funding-matching support from Climate 200, the non-profit group led by clean energy analyst and investor Simon Holmes a Court.

Sir. Wilson said he was a “proud and passionate” liberal who wanted to take a platform for an election, saying “puppet independents” voted with the “extreme greens” more than 70 percent of the time in parliament.

“Every election there are candidates in a single subject who hope they can get a parliament hung to create insecurity and hold the nation hostage; this puppet candidate is no different and we know there are shadowy Labor and Greens -activists who pull in their threads ”.

In response, Ms. Daniel said, “I’m nobody’s puppet – just ask my kids – and in fact I voted for Tim Wilson.”

“But he has proven to be a disappointment to me and many other Goldstein residents, especially in terms of climate change, where when it comes to crunch, he has voted just like Barnaby Joyce, George Christensen and Craig Kelly.”
